Luxury travel to India, with private car, private driver, and private guide assures the traveler the very best use of their time in a country that offers a wealth of diverse manmade and natural treasures. One such treasure is the Golden Temple of Amritsar.

The Golden Temple, considered the holiest of sites within Sikhism is visited by more than 3 million people per month. Visitors to the temple are welcome to spend the night and are fed meals during the day. Completed in 1577 A.D., the tank or surrounding water basin is said to have healing powers and pilgrims the world over come to bathe in what is considered to be its sacred waters.

Sikhism originated in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent toward the end of the 15th century making it one of the youngest major religions within the world. Sikhs believe there is one creator and profess that not any one religion has a monopoly on absolute truth.

Sikhs believe in meditation on the words of its founder Guru Sahib with a focus on ridding themselves of what is described as the “Five Thieves” being (attachment, ego, greed, lust and rage). One should lead a life of truthfulness, fidelity, self-control and purity.

Travelers should plan to visit the temple during the day and return late evening when the ritual of returning the Guru Granth Sahib ( the Sikhs holy book ) is returned for safe keeping inside the Akai Takht. The ritual begins with chants from visitors, followed by a procession leading into the inner sanctum, the Guru Granth Sahib resting on an embroidered pillow while being carried in for safe keeping..

A visit to Amritsar would not be complete without viewing the India-Pakistan Wagah Attari Border Closing Ceremony, which lowers the flags between the two countries at their common border in a dramatic display of pageantry by elite guards from each nation’s military guard.

Other important sites within the country not to be missed would be the Taj in Agra, the Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary near Jaipur, Amer Fort in Jaipur, and visits to both Jodphur and Jaisalmer.
